Welcome to the MycoToilet

Researchers are using this system to test the effectiveness of mycelium, the thread-like root structure of mushrooms, to convert solid waste to soil.

The system separates liquid from solid waste and treats each independently. Liquid waste is sterilized for use as fertilizer. Solid waste is deposited into a bin lined with mycelium, which absorbs odors and speeds decomposition.

By using the MycoToilet you are contributing to a healthier planet.

Thank you for closing the loop!

Mycotoilet was developed by the Biogenic Architecture Lab at the UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and the Hallam Lab at the UBC Department Microbiology and Immunology with support from the UBC MCELLS Research Excellence Cluster.
