MycoToilet Arrives at UBC Botanical Garden

Durfeld Constructors delivered the timber shell of the MycoToilet to the UBC Botanical Garden, a significant step toward realization. Durfeld fabricated the shell at their facility in Pemberton, BC, using an innovative technique that uses cross-braced dowels to eliminate the need for fasteners or glues. The panels were then cut to size using precision CNC fabrication tools at the BC Passive House Facility. The panels were assembled by Durfeld and delivered it to the UBC site on a trailer.

Installing the timber shell at the Botanical Garden required a highly skilled team. Equipment operators from UBC Facilities successfully negotiated the narrow pedestrian paths to the project site. Once at the site, the crew from Durfeld installed the shell in its final position. Botanical Garden staff made sure that no plants were harmed and onlookers were kept at a safe distance.

The timber shell will house a state-of-the-art waste separating toilet that uses mycelium to convert solid waste to nutrient-rich soil. Over the next few weeks, the systems, green roof, and cladding will be installed. The toilet is scheduled to open on September 26th, 2025. More on the MycoToilet page.
