Biogenic Architecture Lab

We develop living architectural materials and environments for a thriving planet.

Projects

The Biogenic Architecture Lab at UBC develops living architectural materials for a thriving planet.

The Biogenic Architecture Lab designs architectural materials with living organisms and complex ecological systems. We approach design as a transdisciplinary endeavour with limitless potential to address environmental challenges across scales. Globally, the built fabric consumes as much as forty percent of all resources. The mycelium biocomposites, seaweeds and other rapidly renewable and minimally processed materials we work with have the potential to replace tired paradigms of scarcity with the material abundance of natural systems. Design with these materials provides new opportunities to engage reciprocal relationships between material ecologies and architecture.
